Rugby Writers

Back in May I was asked by Rugby Borough Council to do a few designs that would be used in an installation they were commissioning for the town centre. The designs illustrated books by authors who are in someway linked to Rugby, and included work by Isabel Wolff, Arthur Ransome and Anthony Horowitz. The illustrations were carved into and around stone seating arrangements by sculptor Michael Sheuermann, who designed and created the installation.
The sculpture was finished last month and yesterday I received these photos. I'll get some clearer images of my designs soon but, until then, here are some to be getting on with. If you'd like to see a couple of the original designs, I blogged about them at the time- see here

The Ghostrider

Canongate commissioned me to do this cover illustration, for a new version of Ismail Kadare's 'The Ghostrider', which was first published in Albania in 1980 with the title 'Doruntina'. This version will be out on 20th May 2010.

Wedding Work

My friends got married in October and asked me to do them a design they could use for their order of service. They wanted everything to be very autumnal, and harvest festival-based, so I gave them this pumpkin design. They used the squashes from the lower left corner of the original inside the booklet, scattered around and framing the words. They also used some bits in their invitations.

It's Back!!

I've finally fixed the website problem and I'm back online! Hoorah!! Nothing much has changed, but I've added a new section, 'Misc.' It's got The Child's i Foundation Christmas cards in it, with a link to Phillips and Evans where you can buy them, and i'm now waiting on Rugby Borough Council to get back to me with images of the stone-carved illustrations I designed for their new installation, Rugby Writers (Michael Scheuermann did the main design and all the carving, I just gave him a few illustrations). It should be installed in the town centre this month, so watch this space!

Website's Down

Unfortunately I'm experiencing some website problems at the moment. I'm trying to sort it out but, until then, if you'd like to see work from my portfolio please have a look through my old blog posts or email me at and I'll send you some JPEGs. Sorry for any problems this causes.

The Child's i Foundation

My friend, Lucy, has been volunteering for The Child's i Foundation, who are seeking to contribute to solving the problem of abandoned babies in Kampala, Uganda. She asked me to design a couple of Christmas cards which they could sell in packs for fund raising. Here are my two designs:

Their new website is under construction, but the old one can be seen here. They also have a Facebook fan page.

Lucy is co-owner of online gallery, along with her husband, Chris. Check it out, they sell beautiful prints and gorgeous, functional ceramics.

For The Love of An Orchard

I've recently finished work on illustrations for a book called 'For The Love Of An Orchard', which will be published by Anova Books imprint, Pavillion. Work included black and white lino illustrations of various orchard fruits, as well as images showing different types of espallier that young trees could be trained into and rough diagrams of a grafted tree and bud types. It was an interesting project to do, i learned a bit about orchard trees, and they specifically asked me to leave as much printing 'mess' around the images as i could to make it more organic and rustic, which was surprisingly hard! The publication date is the 15th March 2010, in plenty of time for next year's fruity harvest!

More monoprinted birthdays

Two more birthdays, my dad's and my friend Chris's. Chris gets the banjo, to go with the jukebox clock we got him, and dad gets the chilli- to go with a Madhur Jaffrey recipe book.

Check out Draw Serge, "an illustrative tribute to the late, great Gainsbourg", and contribute by sending them your own version of the infamous French poet/actor/director/singer. Hopefully i'll put a portrait of my own up at some point but, for now, here's this one, by Milan Rubio.

Thursday, 9 July 2009

I seem to have a lot of friends with birthdays in July. These are the cards i made for Emily (of her dog, Balu, on one of his rare attempts at braving the waves), Olivia (the swan) and I did two of the seagull, because i like him- one for Heidi and one for Ellie, who I went to college with by the sea.

Rugby Writers

I'm currently working on a project for Rugby Town Council to create 5 illustrations depicting works by various authors linked to Rugby. They'll be carved into sandstone by sculptor Michael Scheuermann who has designed a new sculptural seating area for the town centre, based around the theme of Rugby Writers. These illustrations are for (from top to bottom) The Little Grey Men by B.B, , The Demon Headmaster by Gillian Cross, the Alex Rider series by Anthony Horowitz and Arthur Ransome's Swallows and Amazons..

If TATA builds its port at Dhamra, Olive Ridley turtles will pay the ultimate price

TATA is releasing the world's cheapest car. It could also be driving turtles to extinction. To find out more, and to sign the polite letter to Mr Ratan Tata, asking him to reconsider the location of his port, click here:

This is what I'm sending my mum for Mother's Day. The mushrooms are Wood Blewits- one of her favourites since she discovered a collection of the little purple beauties under a cluster of nettles near the old muck heap. Hope she likes them!

I've just finished this for my portfolio, a wrap around cover for Moby Dick. I'm rather pleased with it. Once I've got the spine done I'll get it on my website.

Mslexia Cover Entry

I've just finished this design to enter in Mslexia's cover competition. The brief was completely open, stating only the dimensions and the fact that the designer had to be female. So I chose to use a quote attributed to Eleanor Roosevelt- ex-first lady, author and civil rights advocate, and based the design on Alphonse Mucha's print of Salome, but with Roosevelt as the biblical seductress.

Blog Off

Well, I've decided to give blogging a try. I've heard it's handy for self promotion, and maybe if I keep it up to date it will be. It's free anyway!

So, for my first post, here's the last illustration I did. It's a self- initiated portfolio piece, that I decided to do after reading Bambi. The cover of the version I read was a still from the Disney film, and I wanted to disassociate it a little from that.
